Free Agency Preview: Wide Receivers

Posted on January 20, 2014 by Phil Gentile

Ravens receivers currently under contract:

Torrey Smith, Marlon Brown, Deonte Thompson, & Aaron Mellette

A thin position during the 2013 season, wide receiver gets even thinner if Jacoby Jones were to leave via free agency. Tandon Doss is also a free agent.

Top Five FA Options (based on skill level and potential salary cap hit)

1, Eric Decker ($1.5 million in 2013)

There's no way the Broncos can afford a big contract for Decker with Welker and Demaryius Thomas on the roster right? Look for Decker to get big money elsewhere ala Mike Wallace last year. The Ravens are tight on cap space but you never know what will happen. Did we ever think Elvis Dumervil would fall into our laps?

2. James Jones ($3.75 million in 2013)

Caught 14 touchdowns in 2013 with Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball. Took a step back in 2014 when Rodgers was shelved with a collarbone injury but Jones would be the big redzone threat the Ravens have lacked for years.

3. Julian Edelman ($765,000 in 2013)

Is Edelman really that talented or is Tom Brady just that good? Some team will find out this offseason. Edelman finished 2013 with 105 catches and basically guaranteed himself a nice payday. He also confirmed he is more than just a slot receiver. With Pitta potentially gone and Stokley retiring bringing in Edelman as a reliable possession receiver for Flacco would make too much sense.

4. Kenny Britt ($1.88 million in 2013)

Can you believe this guy is only 25 years old? I feel like he's been in the league for decade! Years of disappointing play and off the field antics might turn most teams away but Britt has elite talent if he gets around the right environment.

5. Devin Hester ($2.9 million in 2013) or Dexter McCluster ($1.4 million in 2013)

If Jacoby Jones were to leave Charm City there are two excellent options in free agency to replace him. Hester is one of the most prolific kick returners in NFL history, boasting 19 career kick/punt return touchdowns.
