NFL Free Agency Recap: Day OnePosted on March 12, 2014 by Slater Jackson
Here is a look at all of the transactions that happened on the first day of free agency:
Aqib Talib signs with Denver Broncos: He better be smiling! The Broncos rolled out the Brinks truck for Talib, giving him for six years and $57 million, including $26 million guaranteed.
Jarius Byrd signs with New Orleans Saints - The top safety in the free agent crop is headed to the Big Easy. He'll form a scary duo with 2013 1st round pick Kenny Vaccaro. It's a six year, $54 million deal with a reported $28 million guaranteed.
Michael Johnson signs with Tampa Bay: One of the premier pass rushers in Free Agency lands in Tampa on a 5 year $43 million deal. Johnson joins a fierce front 7 in Tampa and will be paired outside of Gerald McCoy to create a powerful and explosive defensive line.
Brandon Albert signs with Miami Dolphins: Albert comes to Miami on a 5 year and $46 million deal with $25 million guaranteed. Adding veteran savvy to an offensive line in disarray after a tumultuous season fraught with controversy the Dolphins now have a premier protector on the outside. Albert is a graduate of Glen Burnie High School.
Karlos Dansby signs with the Cleveland Browns: Dansby signs a 4 year deal worth $28 with $14 guaranteed. He is a veteran presence in the locker room and knows what its like to be on a winning team. His production is not elite but he is a major upgrade at the middle linebacker position for the Browns.
Donte Whitner signs with Cleveland Browns: Whitner gets a 4 year deal worth $28 million and fills an immediate need for the Browns as they lost pro bowl safety T.J.Ward in free agency. More of a box safety, Whitner brings a physical presence that will fit in nicely with what new head coach Mike Pettine is looking to establish in Cleveland.
Lamarr Houston signs with Chicago Bears: The former Raider is moving to the Windy City on a 5 year $35 million deal. A stout defensive lineman, Houston is the perfect fit for the Bears defense and will be a pivotal addition moving forward.
Roger Saffold signs with Oakland Raiders: Saffold becomes a rich man as he heads to Oakland with a 5 year and $42.5 Million deal. Top tier money for a player who has not stood out in his position group as of yet. The Raiders though get a proven starter in the NFL and upgrade their line as they move forward.
Eugene Monroe stays in Baltimore: After Baltimore gave up draft picks last season in a trade for Monroe they struck a deal at the beginning of free agency to keep him a Raven. A 5 year and $37.5 Million deal that gives the Ravens stability at left tackle for years to come. This was an important deal for Baltimore as if they didn’t retain Monroe they would have dealt away a lot of capitol to be left empty handed once again. In the end though, General Manager Ozzie Newsome came through and the Ravens can now look to other areas of need.
T.J.Ward signs with Denver Broncos: The all pro safety found a home in Denver as they have agreed to terms. He brings exceptional range at the position and immediately upgrades the Denver secondary.
Arthur Jones Signs with Indianapolis Colts: The former Raven gets reunited with his former defensive coordinator in Chuck Pagano as they agreed to terms on a 5 year contract which averages $6 million. An underrated pass rusher, Jones finds himself in a similar defense to the one that he has been playing in. The colts will plug Jones in immediately and improve their overall pass rush.
Jared Veldheer Signs with Arizona Cardinals: Arizona makes a big splash in free agency by getting a quality left tackle on a 5 year and $35 Million contract. The cardinals have been in desperate need for a quality tackle to help keep their quarterbacks upright. A critical signing in a division that see’s some of the best pass rusher in the NFL.
DeMarcus Ware cut but the Dallas Cowboys: After failing to come to a compromise the Cowboys opted to part ways with the franchises leading sack artist. Ware will be in high demand in the coming days of free agency.
Dexter McCluster signs in Tennessee: The live wire running back moves to the Titans on a 3 year deal worth up to $12 Million. As the titans look to trade Chris Johnson they have already found his replacement in McCluster.
